On the cover of the next edition of September 2020 EL, rather than a photo of Winfrey in some sort of fall setting, readers will see instead the depiction of a digital artist of the deceased, Kentucky resident Breonna Taylor.

It is the first time in the magazine’s existence that Winfrey has not appeared on the cover.

Taylor was murdered in March 2020 by police who had broken into the apartment she shared with her boyfriend. He, in the chaotic moment, opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing 26-year-old Taylor.

In the issue of the magazine, Winfrey explains his absence from the cover.

“I think of Breonna Taylor often,” he writes. “I was the same age as the two daughters from my school in South Africa who have been in quarantine with Stedman and me since March … Their whole lives shine with the light of hope. That was taken out of Breonna in such a horrible way. What I know for sure: we can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. ”

Oprah Winfrey is finishing the printed version of ‘O’

After publishing a print version for the past twenty years, Winfrey decided to start focusing solely on the digital edition of the magazine.

Published jointly by Hearst Corporation and Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, the media company explained the magazine’s shift to digital.
